CiviLab @CUT’s Participation in Mandela Month Pothole Patching Initiative
Introduction
CiviLab @CUT was awarded a pothole patching project in the Free State (FS) province, covering five district municipalities. To commemorate Mandela Month, the company honoured Nelson Mandela’s legacy through volunteering and community service, focusing on improving local infrastructure by fixing potholes. This report outlines our contributions and activities and efforts during this momentous month.
Mandela Day Activities
Our Mandela Month activities at Joe Solomon Primary School started on July 18th with CiviLab @CUT. Our Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP) learners demonstrated their skills by fixing potholes using our cold mix asphalt in front of the school and at Omega Old Age Home. This initiative was our direct contribution to the community on Mandela Day, reflecting our commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and supporting community welfare.
Provincial Mandela Month Programme Participation
On the 26th of July, CiviLab @CUT was invited by the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport to participate in the Provincial Mandela Month Programme, hosted by the FS Provincial Government. The event was led by Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae and MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Dibolelo Mance, at Pelonomi Regional Hospital and National District Hospital, respectively. Our team volunteered to fix number potholes within the hospital premises, contributing to safer and more accessible healthcare facilities.
On the 30th of July, CiviLab @CUT continued our Mandela Month initiatives at Katleho Hospital Pharmacy in Virginia. This event was hosted by the MEC of the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Saki Mokoena. Once again, our team volunteered to fix potholes, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to community service and infrastructure improvement.
Conclusion
CiviLab @CUT is proud to have contributed to Mandela Month by improving infrastructure at three public hospitals, a school, and an old age home. Our participation in these activities not only honoured Nelson Mandela’s legacy but also showcased the skills and dedication of our EPWP learners. We remain committed to serving our community and enhancing the quality of life for all residents in the Free State province.
