Who We Are
Initiated in 2012, CiviLab@CUT was established out of a genuine desire to blend advanced civil engineering research with meaningful, community-focused engagement across Central South Africa. Originating within the Soil Mechanics Research Group (SMRG) at the Central University of Technology.
Why CiviLab@CUT exist?
Our laboratory was first tasked with addressing the pervasive problem of structural damage to light buildings, especially subsidized RDP housing, caused by expansive soils endemic to our semi-arid region. The founding team—Prof E Theron, Dr PR Stott, and Dirk Bester—recognized that conventional soil testing methods were often insufficient for the challenges faced locally, particularly as new reliability-oriented codes like Eurocode7 demanded more robust and practical solutions. This insight drove the creation of innovative testing procedures and methodologies, marking the birth of CiviLab as a forward-thinking, problem-solving hub.
At our core, we believe civil engineering is not just about the design and analysis of materials and structures but about improving lives and building stronger communities. Our vision is to be a laboratory that bridges the worlds of research, teaching, and direct service, deeply embedded in the social fabric of the Free State.
INITIATED IN
CiviLab Focus Areas
By tackling real-world issues such as soil stability, infrastructure longevity, and the environmental impacts of construction our work helps safeguard vulnerable households, elevate standards for public safety, and ensure that policy and practice work in harmony. CiviLab@CUT’s pioneering spirit extends beyond the academic: every research project, community outreach effort, and student training module is designed to leave a lasting, positive mark. We are committed to collaboration across sectors, engaging with government, industry, and everyday citizens to transfer knowledge, foster innovation, and cultivate a new generation of engineers who understand both the technical and human dimensions of their work.
Teaching and learning are fundamental to who we are. We offer students and professionals practical exposure to state-of-the-art testing techniques, reliability analysis, and the skills needed to adapt to evolving industry standards. Our laboratory acts as a classroom, a research platform, and a community partner—embracing projects that serve schools, local municipalities, small businesses, and non-profits. Through service learning, mentorship, and fieldwork, we ensure that future engineers grasp the importance of ethical practice and social responsibility, developing not only technical excellence but a deep appreciation for the socio-economic realities that influence construction and urban development in South Africa.
Serving the community is not an afterthought for CiviLab@CUT—it is integral to our identity. Our team invests in outreach programmes that address urgent needs, such as improving early childhood facilities, supporting housing upgrades, or responding to infrastructure failures caused by geological hazards. By engaging on projects associated with significant dates like Mandela Day or joining collaborative partnerships—from fence construction for creches to upgrades at community aftercare centres—we demonstrate that technical knowledge gains its highest value when dedicated to solving the pressing issues of our time. These efforts not only uplift local communities but also offer rich learning environments for our students, blending coursework with service and fostering a spirit of volunteerism, leadership, and cross-disciplinary problem solving.
Ultimately, CiviLab@CUT exists to advance civil engineering knowledge while championing the principle that research and teaching must actively contribute to the well-being of society. Our founders dared to question established norms and created a culture where curiosity, compassion, and innovation drive everything we do. Today, we continue this legacy, striving to be a centre of excellence in both technical research and community partnership, building bridges—literal and metaphorical—that endure for generations. Whether through cutting-edge laboratory experiments, classroom instruction, or grassroots engagement, CiviLab@CUT stands as a testament to the power of education and engineering in service to the greater good, dedicated to improving the built environment and enriching every sector of our vibrant, diverse community.
